The Miner's Photograph: A Pathway to the Past by Steven Wade Veatch. The story of Robert Plews (my great-grandfather) who immigrated from England seeking better opportunities and found employment at the Elkton Mine in 1897.
Steven Veatch recently discovered this 1899 photo of his ancestors tucked away in a box. It shows his great-grandparents, Robert and Janet Plews, with two of their daughters standing in front of the home where they lived in Elkton, Colorado.
The town of Elkton and the historic underground Elkton Gold Mine, where Steve's great-grandfather worked, were located in the Cripple Creek Mining District near the City of Victor. Both the town and the mine have been erased with the expansion of modern surface mining in recent times--gone forever, but fortunately not forgotten. |
This photo provided “a path to the past” for Steve. It inspired him to write a fascinating story about the place and the people shown in the photo.
